Bonnie Fleming is an internationally recognized particle physicist with outstanding expertise and a world leader in neutrino physics. Her work focuses on sign language structure as a way to better understand the flexibility of the human language capacity in constructing spoken and signed languages, as well as the effects of communication mode (or modality) on language. Her current research has expanded to conduct analyses on a new protactile language, which includes the modalities of proprioception and touch, that is emerging in DeafBlind communities in the U.S. In March, Johnson announced former art appraiser and curator Clinée Hedspeth as Harkey’s successor. Hedspeth has known Johnson for 20 years; they both got their start in politics working together in the offices of Oak Park representatives Don Harmon and Deborah L. Graham. She later worked for Johnson as his legislative director from 2018 to 2021, when he was Cook County commissioner.

And so it provides a release for people to be able to get away from their stress and troubles. This year not only marks 40 years of Chicago house music; these celebrations are also part of Millennium Park’s 20th anniversary year. The Chicago House Stage on the North Promenade will be the home of the Queer Fam Pride Jam all day. The event, a kickoff to Pride Month, celebrates LGBTQ+ families, kids and allies with all-ages activities including dance lessons, DJ sets, performances and more. This is a new home for the Pride Jam, which took place at Salt Shed last year. The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events announced the lineup and schedule Thursday, highlighting artists like Tony Touch, ANANÉ, Ash Lauryn and Karizma.

In his own words, Robert Owens has been making house music ‘before house had a name’. One of the most distinctive, coveted and prolific voices in the genre, Robert has an illustrious career that started in late 80’s Chicago and has produced some of the greatest tracks house music has witnessed. This panel will talk to members of the House music community that got the ball rolling in the effort to save the Warehouse, a critical locale in the shaping of House music.

This year’s Chicago House Music Festival and Conference will commemorate those important decades of music history with events, seminars and of course, performances — all free. Here are some of the experiences of the people who were there at the beginning, who helped to create house music, in their own words. Located on the 1st floor, the Buddy store supports more than 200 local artists and small manufacturers selling Chicago-made art, objects, and more. This collaboration between Public Media Institute and DCASE furthers both institutions’ goals of providing visibility and opportunities to artists across the Chicagoland area. The public is invited into the Dance Studio to get a sneak peek at works-in-progress showings, artist talks, and more hosted by the current Chicago Cultural Center resident artists. This project is also supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Their bright orange renovated mail truck can be spotted around the city encouraging conversation about positive change in the built environment. Join us for design and skill-building workshops on the second and fourth Friday and Saturday of the month (September through December). Features people, places and things nominated by Chicagoans for their cultural contribution to their neighborhood’s vitality. Check out the features at the Welcome Center, off the Randolph Street Lobby. Some attendees Saturday danced along for a performer’s entire hour-long set, while others avoided the heat and enjoyed the music from the shade.

Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the artistry and cultural tapestry that adorns walls and viaducts all over the city. For the first two weeks of the exhibition, the Michigan Avenue Galleries will be transformed into a dynamic urban landscape by three artists painting murals in the gallery space. Visitors will witness as the artists bring their unique visions to life right before their eyes.

Taste of Chicago presents two more neighborhood events at Pullman Park (July 15) and Marquette Park (August 5) before culminating in the downtown Taste in Grant Park (September 8-10).
